    Descriptive info: Hansen Family, Waerenga, Te Kauwhata.. Hukaroa Hereford Stud was started in 1968 at Ardmore by Peter and Glennis Hansen with the late Vic and Teena Hansen and was relocated in 1992 to a 520ha (500ha effective) hill farm at Waerenga and since then the Hukaroa Stud has been farmed and managed by Dean and Lisa Hansen.. Two further blocks adjacent to each other totalling 250ha (240ha effective) were later purchased at Taniwha, 12km from Hukaroa Station, as a finishing farm.. The Hansen family are proud and regular suppliers to the award winning Hereford Prime quality beef programme in the greater Waikato region.. The business is owned by Hansen’s Farms Ltd – and is very much a family business.. Directors Peter and Glennis are still actively involved with Herefords and the NZ Hereford Association.. Their son Dean and his wife Lisa manage the Hukaroa Station and Hereford stud.. Dean and Lisa have three girls Briar, 16, Gemma, 14, and Erica, 12 who enjoy being involved on the farm.. Hukaroa Station is in the hills 26kms east of Te Kauwhata and rises from 60 metres to 400 metres above sea level in the Hapuakohe Range where it’s facing westerlies that bring sleet in winter while on calmer days there are frequent frosts.. They farm 5500 stock units comprised 60% of  ...   180 calves are born - a 97% calving rate – and at the time the calves are weaned, all the yearling steers which were purchased the previous year as calves, are sent to the Taniwha block for finishing.. The weaner target weights are 260kg for bull calves and 240kg for heifer calves while the mating weight for yearling heifers averages 350kg with 330kg the minimum weight.. The couple have an expert eye for cattle - Dean, 45, from an early age was helping his parents’ with their Hereford stud herd at Ardmore while Lisa also comes from a farming background on her parents’ Friesian dairy stud farm at Karaka.. The couple first met while showing cattle at an A&P Show and for the duration of their 20-year marriage they have developed Hukaroa Station into the picture it is today.. “We work well together.. We also have very similar ideas about the type of cattle we like,” says Lisa.. They test their knowledge in which they independently assess pens of young cattle and then compare rankings.. He says the Hukaroa herd is bred for calving ease, as indicated by smooth shoulders, good weight gain that can be carried on a long body with deep capacity, and durability on the hills as seen in their strong legs and overall soundness..

    Descriptive info: Jason Thornton, Waikato.. Jason Thornton’s ultimate goal is to own a sheep and beef farm and he is working towards that aim.. Jason was born on a dry stock farm at Te Pahu and when he left school he enrolled at the Waikato Technical Institute where he hoped to begin his career as a dry stock farmer.. Unfortunately there were too few applicants for the class so Jason was diverted into the dairy industry.. Jason milked cows for 10 years and it was during that time that he was introduced to Herefords.. One employer offered Jason a cash bonus or the equivalent value in reared calves.. Jason took the Hereford Friesian cross calves and grazed them on his parent’s property and enjoyed watching his investment increase in value.. He is now one of Hereford Prime’s most regular suppliers in the Waikato.. Jason’s parents, Neville and Doreen Thornton have always been farming and currently live on a lifestyle block in Te Kowhai on the outskirts of Hamilton.. Jason manages the day to day running of that property and leases a further 25ha (60 acres) nearby.. Along with looking after his cattle, Jason drives for local agricultural contractors, drives when needed for Kempthorne Transport and does the occasional stint as a relief milker.. Jason is certainly a handy man to have in the district.. David Whelan, the procurement agent for Magill Meats, has been a friend of the Thornton family for many years and is Jason’s mentor.. The Frankton sale yards are the usual source of supply for store cattle.. Sometimes Jason buys the  ...   over the winter can be a problem if it gets too wet but a good supply of silage ensures the cattle are always going forward and getting plenty to eat.. Jason takes good care of his pastures.. When it is very wet he set-stocks his paddocks with two or three animals and supplements their diet with rye and clover silage.. He has a set of portable scales and weighs the cattle regularly.. When feeding silage he has noted that it is common for the cattle to put on more than 2kg a day.. Jason likes to test his skill by selecting cattle to suit a specific weight range and schedule.. David Whelan also checks his selections and sometimes adds or rejects a couple.. Jason then eagerly awaits the arrival of the kill sheets which he finds very interesting and rewarding if the cattle kill out well.. When purchasing cattle, the breed of the animal is not of paramount importance.. Sometimes a pen of cattle worth the money can be a bit of a mixed brew.. However Jason’s preference is Hereford-Friesian cross cattle because they are usually very quiet and the Hereford cross animals, qualifying for Hereford Prime are worth a few extra dollars.. “Temperament is really important when finishing cattle.. I do not have a dog so it is important that the animals come to my call.. Anything that is a bit wild is just a pain,” he says.. Every Hereford breeder and Hereford Prime processor will be hoping that Jason achieves his aim, and continues producing Herefords for the Hereford Prime programme..

The Chartwell-based restaurant scooped the coveted hospitality award from the nationally recognised Auckland-based Sale St and Soul Bar and Bistro.. The restaurant s unpretentious décor pays homage to butchery history by using traditional butcher shop themes, warm wood, stainless steel, butcher s blocks and vintage meat-hooks which were originally in the Horotiu meat works.. Hadley, Macklow and Elliottyson gradually developed the paddock-to-plate steakhouse-style and decided to tour famous United States eateries to fine-tune the concept.. What they discovered cemented the Smith and McKenzie commitment to let our beef do the talking.. Quality beef from naturally grazed cattle provided by local suppliers is extremely important to Smith McKenzie.. They serve Hereford Prime scotch fillet, rump, sirloin and a 400gm T-bone.. all provided by Magill Meats.. They also serve Angus pure eye fillet.. Chefs Tom Wepiri and Tony Elliotyson with the Hospitality Award trophy.. 300gm Hereford prime served with onion rings.. and a mushroom sauce glaze.. The restaurant opened its doors in March 2009 and was a finalist in the HANZ awards that year and every year since.. It has been destined for success from the start and there s no doubt the concept is winning the vote of the dining public.. It s been a multi-award winning month for the eatery, as they have also been ranked 13.. th.. on the Deloitte Fast 50 with an impressive 387 per cent growth in three years.. Smith McKenzie, the only hospitality business on the Fast 50,was named Central North Island s highest ranking company and the fastest growing retail or consumer product company in the region.. It s not just the menu and the turnover that makes the 150-seat restaurant so successful.. Regular quiz nights are packed with patrons and Smith McKenzie s loyalty card scheme, which also comes in a kid s version, is thought to be one of the most successful in New Zealand.. I visited the restaurant on a Monday evening and was surprised to see the dining room full before 6pm.. I then noticed that most tables had small children enjoying a night out and I asked our waitress Nic Elliottyson if this was a normal occurrence and she explained that Monday night was a $2 night for young children.. Kid s meals were served at a cost of $2 but if the parents filled out a form with the name of the children s school or kindergarten that $2 was then donated by Smith Mc kenzie to their child s school.. It was a great promotion and certainly had appeal to lots of customers.. Add to that Smith and McKenzie has been honoured with the Beef and Lamb Excellence Award, which is assessed and awarded annually by culinary experts for excellence in beef and lamb cuisine.. People s Choice Awards is about to be launched in all participating Beef and Lamb Excellence Awards restaurants.. Diners who choose beef or lamb from the menu during April can fill out a voting form rating the dish on various points, including presentation, tenderness and value for money.. At the end of the month, the highest scoring restaurant will receive the People s Choice Award, with one lucky diner from the restaurant winning a meal for two to the value of $150.. As a Chef I love hearing the customers positive reaction to the flavour of the meat and tenderness as well as feedback on the consistency of the product.. How do you personally enjoy Hereford Prime (ie rare, medium etc) and served with what?.. I enjoy it medium rare, well rested and served simply off the wood-grill.. Do you brand/identify Hereford Prime on your menu if so do consumers enquire about it?.. It is specified on the menu as Hereford Prime and also we do get enquiries about the product, queries about the aging process and where we have sourced the Hereford Prime from.. I think now as we have had it on the menu from our early days regular customers can trust they are getting a quality product based on their previous experiences, as well as when new customers try it for the first time they will also have that positive experience as well.. I had heard good things about Hereford Prime and I changed butchers finding that he could supply me with Hereford Prime and haven t looked back since.. My main Hereford dish is the Prime Hereford ribeye, which this season I serve with smokey duck fat roasted agria potatoes, buttered seasonal vegetables, a lick of jus and a flame grilled green capsicum chutney.. As I am both the restauranteur and chef the main thing I like about Hereford Prime is happy customers because that s what this game is all about.. Rare is the degree of cooking I like and I love to eat it with pretty much anything from a piece of bread to a fine gourmet dish, the possibilities are endless.. Yes I do state on my menu that it is Hereford Prime and also have a plaque on the wall in the restaurant given to me by some of the Hereford Prime cattle breeders when they dined with me a couple of years ago.. We have also received the NZ Beef and Lamb Hallmark award of excellence every year since 2005 and this also provides pretty good advertising of a good product as well.. Customers do enquire sometimes and I am only too happy to give them all the information and know-how I have to get them to try it at home themselves.. All my customers are very positive towards the programme and this is another good reason to keep it on the menu..
