  • Title: 2014 Sale Bulls | Glenanthony Simmentals
Descriptive info: EMAIL US.. All bulls are semen and service tested and all bulls are blood tested.. free of BVD and BVD vaccinated.. We are proud to present 17 rising 2yr old purebred Simmental bulls for sale from our present herd of 65 registered Simmental breeding cows.. This year we again have young bulls by our proven sires; Monreid Yardstick, Haylands Rupert, Glenanthony Primo (AP72), Glenanthony Guiness, Ruaview Scotch AT01, and Glenanthony Westerly.. To this sire list we add the new sires Glenanthony Warwick, and Glenanthony AX32.. The young sire making the most impact on this sale is our new polled bull Glenanthony Y-ARTA AY02 (ET).. He is represented by no less than 7 young bulls, 5 of which are polled.. In the main these are early maturing bulls with plenty of thickness and depth to their muscle pattern.. They all have excellent temperaments and lower birthweight EBV s ranging from +0.. 3 to +2.. 9.. On our tour to Germany in 2012 we were really impressed by the way the German Simmental and Flechvieh breeders have, over a period of 15 to 20 years, polled almost all the purebred cattle in their National Stud Book.. We have decided to try to do the same to the Glenanthony Herd as much better polled genetics are now available in New Zealand and overseas.. Y-arta is only the start.. Beef cattle prices have fluctuated over the last 12 months.. While sales of yearling cattle in the spring were quite buoyant, prices at weaner fairs in the autumn struggled to better last year s prices.. Congratulations must go to all those Glenanthony clients who have helped promote the Simmental breed by presenting excellent cattle at yearling and weaner sales throughout the lower North Island.. Special mention must be made of Russell and Margo Dever from Wairoa and Bruce and Sue Wilson from Hawera who again topped the weaner fairs at Stortford Lodge and Stratford respectively.. The Simmental Breed Society s bus tour of Eastland was a great success and all members that toured thoroughly enjoyed the visit to Russell and Margo at Pokopoko Station.. There, we viewed the Pokopoko crossbred Simmental cow herd, were thoroughly entertained by an impassioned presentation on the qualities of the Simmental breed by Graham Williamson and thoroughly enjoyed the chocolate truffles eagerly purchased from Margo.. Well done people.. Glenanthony is proud to be one the few Beef studs of any breed continuing to support A P Shows here in the North Island.. Many of these shows no longer have a Beef Cattle section owing to a lack of entries.. Where possible we still enter our show team of up to 20 Simmental cattle to promote the Simmental breed and the Glenanthony brand.. A highlight this year was the success of the whole team at the New Zealand Royal Show in Feilding.. Yardstick s 7yr old daughter Toffee Pop won the Royal Champion Senior female award, Y-arta s yearling heifer Azure won Champion yearling heifer and his yearling bull Ratalea Anchor, shown by Sue Wylie, was reserve champion yearling bull.. Y-arta himself had to settle for reserve champion Senior Bull behind our other 4yr old sire Glenanthony Yale.. Yale had a great show, winning Supreme Champion Simmental and the Meat and Wool cup.. At the New Zealand Easter Show in Auckland Y-arta, showing how he has matured into an outstanding looking sire over this summer, turned the tables on Yale by himself winning Supreme Champion Simmental and also the Meat and Wool cup.. The other ongoing highlight for Glenanthony is the nurturing of young people into the beef cattle world.. Working with a large show team, Glenanthony is able to give young people the opportunity to work with these cattle and develop skills in handling, preparing and showing them.. These young people get an opportunity to display their skills at the Future Beef weekend which is held each year in Feilding.. Glenanthony fully supports the Future Beef concept and this year promoted four young handlers by entering three steers.. All four girls came away with prizes.. Special mention should be made of Ella Tweedie who, following in brother Max s footsteps, won the Intermediate handlers competition.. The Hoogenboom sisters Amy and Rachel also tried hard and ended up winning their respective module sections.. Mention of Future Beef would not be complete without special  ...   full sister.. He has a moderate frame and lots of thickness and depth to his muscle pattern.. His EBV for birthweight is the best in the sale at -1.. 1.. LOT 8 - GLEN ANTHONY.. 0299AA0024.. Another very smooth muscled polled bull with that added softness so typical of Y-arta himself.. LOT 9 - GLEN ANTHONY ATOM.. 0299AA0035.. At Glenanthony we offer a variety of bulls to suit all tastes.. This is a rugged polled bull with extra lengthand frame score.. He has shown good growth and a low birthweight EBV of +1.. 5.. Will be an excellent hill countrybull siring weaners with extra size and height to stand out at the weaner fair.. LOT 10 - GLEN ANTHONY.. 0299AA0001.. A mature autumn born bull with tons of length and power.. He showed a good serving capacity, is ready to go.. LOT 11 - GLEN ANTHONY ALFRED.. 0299AA0064.. The youngest bull in the sale, out of Toffee Pop, one of our outstanding Yardstick cows.. He is a rugged individual showing great growth for age.. Should move well on hill country.. LOT 12 - GLEN ANTHONY.. 0299AA0057.. A son of GA Guiness showing good length and strength.. His birthweight EBV of +1.. 7 together with a well set.. shoulder and good neck extension indicate easy calving.. LOT 13 - GLEN ANTHONY.. 0299AA0061.. An upstanding youg bull by Westerly with an excellent forequarter and a balanced set of figures.. LOT 14 - GLEN ANTHONY.. 0299AA0012.. A medium framed easy calving young sire.. Look at his smooth shoulder and EBV for birthweight of only +0.. 2.. he will be ideal for mating with heifers or smaller cows.. LOT 15 - GLEN ANTHONY.. 0299AA0013.. A medium framed bull by Y-arta with lots of thickness and depth of muscle.. He scanned really well at 111sq.. cm.. another easy calving sire with a birthweight EBV of only +0.. LOT 16 - GLEN ANTHONY.. 0299AA0048.. A good framed easy calving polled bull by Y-arta with a good shoulder and a low birthweight EBV of +0.. 3.. LOT 17 - GLEN ANTHONY.. 0299AA0042.. A medium framed polled bull with an excellent muscle pattern.. Follows the pattern of polled sons of Y-arta with a low birthweight of +0.. 6.. REFERENCE SIRES 2014 BULL SALE.. GLEN ANTHONY Y-ARTA AY02.. A young sire who has it all; polledness, soundness,, a body to die for, easy calving and good libido.. MONREID YARDSTICK A06001 (IMP AUS).. AUAPAPY001.. Now nine years of age Yardstck has maintained his soundness and excellent conformation.. What a thrill to see his progeny performing with distinction on farm and in the public arena.. He has produced many notable sires including Tundra and Telstar (2006), Utah (2007) and Westerle, Waterford and Warwick (2008).. Warwick has performed very well for the Timperley family of Opawa inland from Timaru.. For them Warwick has sired two all-breed winning yearlings and was the sire of their 2013 sale bulls.. Note that Yardstick is a four way trait leader on breed plan.. HAYLANDS RUPERT AR17.. 1562AR0017.. Rupert grew out to be an impressive sire with a high libido and excellent carcass qualities.. He has passed on his length, his exceptional thickness through the loin and his depth of muscling to his progeny.. The highlight of this year was the success of his son Zodiac in winning the Champion of Champions Award at the 2013 Beef Expo.. The Rupert/Yardsick cross has produced some outstanding cattle typified by this year s Beef Expo entries.. Rupert is now a trait leader for 400 and 600 day weight.. GLEN ANTHONY PRIMO.. 0299AP0072.. An early maturing heavily muscled bull sold to Andrew Tweedie at our 2006 bull sale.. He combines easy calving with excellent carcass qualities.. His EBV profile shows excellent calving ease, a birthweight EBV of -1.. 0 and growth rate figures in the top 20% for the breed.. GLEN ANTHONY WESTERLEY AW24 (ET).. 0299AW0024.. This picture tells it all, an extremely smooth, deep muscle pattern which displays the softness that we expected in Yardstick s progeny.. Westerley is the best example to date of these outstanding carcass characteristics.. After using him lightly and enjoying three very successful show seasons (three Meat and Wool Cups) we have sold him to Murray Elliott of Island Stream Simmentals near Oamaru.. RUAVIEW SCOTCH.. AT1 1558AT0001.. GLEN ANTHONY GUINESS.. 0299AG0100.. GLEN ANTHONY WARWICK AW39.. 0299AW0039..

  • Title: 2013 : Another stellar year. | Glenanthony Simmentals
Descriptive info: Glenanthony Zodiac (0299AZ0022) not only won the Champion Simmental Award at the 2013 Beef Expo but also went on to win the Champion of Champions when four out of the six individual breed judges placed him first.. It has taken Tony Thompson 35 years of entering bulls in the national sales, more recently called Beef Expo, to finally win a Champion of Champions award.. He is either a slow learner or he has simply outlasted the opposition!!.. SUMMARY OF BEEF EXPO ENTRIES.. Glenanthony Zodiac (AZ22).. A top bull with great length, thickness and depth of muscle expression and an excellent temperament.. Sue Wylie in attendance did an excellent job preparing and presenting Zodiac for sale.. His win in the Champion of Champions was bitter sweet as he failed to meet our expectations in the sale ring.. Although we failed to sell him as a stud bull we have to congratulate the buyers who are commercial farmers from the Hakataramea Valley in South Canterbury.. They purchased Zodiac for $6000.. Glenanthony Zambesi 0299AZ0034.. Another outstanding example of the Rupert/Yardstick cross showing all the excellent carcass qualities of these two sires.. Zambesi was only broken in a few weeks prior to Beef Expo, testament to his good termperament.. Zambesi was sold again to the farmers of the Haka Valley where he will join Zodiac.. His sale price was $8,500.. Glenanthony Aztec  ...   Andrew Tracey Neal for $3,000.. Glenanthony Amelia 0299AA0004.. Amelia is a polled heifer, the result of an embryo transplant.. Her sire is the German bull Steinadler who Glenis and I saw at the Munich Agricultural Exhibition in September 2012.. To exhibit a big 8-year old bull at a show is no mean feat and Steinadler impressed us with his soundness and excellent carcass qualities.. Amelia was passed in at the Queen of Hearts Sale and was purchased by Fritz Recher after we got her home for the asking price of $3,000.. Glenanthony Amber 0299AA0014.. A lovely soft heifer showing the thickness so typical of the Rupert/Yardstick cross.. Amber is a medium frame heifer who achieved a third placing in the show that preceded the Queen of Hearts Sale.. She was purchased by Simmental Breed Society president Gary McCorkindale for $3,500.. Glenanthony Alma 0299AA0008.. A big heifer for her age with tons of frame together with a smooth muscle pattern.. Alma sold to Jo Tim Barclay of Okawa Ltd.. , Te Awamutu for $2,750.. Jo rang me a week after the sale enquiring as to the whereabouts of her recent purchase.. On following up on my suggested contacts she was surprised to find her heifer had been sent to the Okawa Hereford Stud in Geraldine in mid-Canterbury.. She has since returned to Te Awamutu none the worse for her experience..

  • Title: A History of Glen Anthony Simmental Stud | Glenanthony Simmentals
Descriptive info: On returning to New Zealand the Thompson s settled initially in the Waikato where Tony began his professional career as a Veterinarian.. There they farmed a small property and first registered the Glen Anthony Simmental herd No 299 in 1973 with a handful of crossbred cows and one imported purebred cow Woolston s Fasan.. In 1974 Tony and Glennis relocated to Waipukurau in Central Hawke s Bay where Tony joined a thriving Veterinary Practice and with Glennis set about replacing the crossbred herd with Purebred Simmental cows.. These were mainly from the German Fleckvich breed of Simmentals.. They included Glen Anthony Excel (by the great Hax) and Peastons Flora from the direct German importation of 1974 as well as cows such as Ballacosilley Gertrud, Glenturk Anna and Sundowner Raches Emmaline (to name a few) originally imported from the British Isles and acquired by Glen Anthony at dispersal sales here in New Zealand.. Initially the Glen Anthony stud was established on 230 acres (96ha) of rolling country eight kilometers east of Waipukurau.. Here, the purebred herd had expanded to sixty cows by the late 1980 s.. Excel s son by Canadian Extra had topped the first North Island National sale at $2,500 and Gertrud s son Newry topped the 1984 National at $17,000.. It is amazing that it has taken a further 20 years for the stud to regain those dizzy heights with Glen Anthony Morven selling for the top auction price of $16,000 in 2004.. Over those twenty years the stud has expanded to 500 acres and 120 to 140 breeding cows including 20 to 40 recipients carrying embryo transplant calves.. Sires such as Dunmore Hansa, BBA Galant and Great Guns Ferdinand have played a significant role in the studs development along with the use of homebred bulls such as Aristocrat, Sargent Pepper and Guiness who have all been bred from the families originating from those foundation Fleckvich cows.. Glen Anthony has built up a reputation for breeding good framed cattle with plenty of fleshing.. Low birth weights are not selected for.. Calving ease is the main selection criteria.. The stud aims to breed big females capable of easily calving up to 50kg calves if necessary.. Sale bulls are scanned and ranked for overall muscle development by the Falkirk Index system.. Glen Anthony clients have built an enviable record in the commercial scene.. Crossbred cattle from Glen Anthony bulls regularly top the weaner and yearling sales throughout New Zealand with Graham Williamson of Wairoa topping $1000 per head for weaner steers in 2002.. Glen Anthony themselves topped the weaner market this year (2005) with cull stud weaner bulls selling for $755 or $2.. 35 per kilo.. Glen Anthony also has a reputation second to none in the show ring.. They have been competing at A P shows since 1978 and have built a tremendous record not only for their success but also for their willingness to support the A P movement and promote the Simmental Breed by regularly showing a big team of up to 20 cattle.. In New Zealand the major award for the supreme champion of all breeds is the Meat and Wool Cup.. Glen Anthony over the last 15 years has probably won more of these awards at major shows than most other studs.. For Glennis and Tony it is their weekend pastime.. Sure beats the hell out of fishing!.. We thought a lot of the bull calf and indicated our interest to the Murphy s during the winter.. He grew on very nicely and although November born reached 920kg liveweight by 16 months of age - Easter 2005.. He went to the Sydney Royal Easter Show where he won Supreme Simmental Exhibit of the Show.. Because of popular demand in Australia he was put up for sale.. Tony traveled to Nundle in April that year and checked him out.. He looked great.. Plenty of width with muscularity.. A great back line and well developed hind quarter.. Plenty of softness, soundness and character.. The rest is history.. GlenAnthony purchased Yardstick and he arrived safely in New Zealand in July 2005 and quickly settled in to the Glen Anthony routine.. He is so even tempered - nothing ruffles him.. A lovely kind eye, a quiet nature, excellent confirmation and beef qualities to die for.. At 2 1/2 years of age he weighed in excess of 1200kg and stood 60cm at the hips.. He has uniform thickness right through, scanning 144 sqcm for EMA with great depth and width in his hind quarters.. He has that special softness that is associated with carcass quality yet scans only 5mm of fat over the rib and rump area.. In the show ring he was unbeaten in 2005 and 2006 winning Meat Wool Cups at the New Zealand Royal at Hamilton in November 05, the Best of Beef at Feilding in March 2006 the Auckland Royal Easter Show 2006 and the N Z Royal in Christchurch in Nov.. 2006.. As well as this he was judged supreme exhibit of all stock entered, including dairy, pigs, sheep, alpacas and horses at the N.. Z.. Royal 2005, the Auckland Royal Easter Show 2006, the N.. Royal 2006 and again at the Royal Easter Show 2007, an amazing achievement.. From Glen Anthony s viewpoint success was enjoyable but the most satisfying aspect of showing was the way the beef experts accepted and commented on Yardstick s beef qualities and conformation.. The complimentary comments of breed judges, breeders from other breeds and commercial people alike were encouraging and very much appreciated.. Yardstick s progeny have proven to be all we expected.. They have good temperaments, their fathers kind eye and facial markings and excellent carcass qualities.. Already they have impressed our peers who have stood as cattle judges at the 2008 Autumn shows.. Yardstick progeny from three different studs have dominated allbreeds calf and yearling classes at Feilding Best of Beef 2008 and 2009, and the Auckland Royal Easter Show.. 2008.. Glen Anthony Tundra won both yearling bull classes and was runner-up in the Meat and Wool Cup at the Auckland Royal Easter Show, and this year another yearling bull Glen Anthony Utah won the Meat Wool Cup at the Fielding Best of Beef Show.. Yardstick is still a Trans Tasman trait leader for 600-day weight and is definitely making his mark on the Simmental breed in Australia and New Zealand.. 2006 - 2007 SEASON.. DRY DRY DRY.. What a challenge.. A poor spring with quality meadow hay proving very difficult to find.. Then a moist early summer followed by the long dry that has gone on and on.. No amazing recovery in the Autumn as happened in 2006! Thanks to Simon Reisma of Te Awa Road for taking on forty cows and calves at the end of January.. Helped us to get through at home on the little rough feed we had left.. We have been feeding out now since March.. We have used up all our own balage and that which we purchased from Norm Wiley and acquired through Steve McCutcheon back in the spring.. From there on we have had to buy, buy, buy.. Thanks to Hawkes Bay Farmers transport and Kesty Manning for helping with the many unit loads of hay and baylage that we have had to buy in from Feilding.. A special thanks to Don Foster for his enthusiasm and encouragement.. Don helped us source baylage in the Waikato and has taken on half our herd of yearling bulls to graze on his farm at Huntly.. Congratulations once again to Graham and Denise Williamson for topping the weaner fair at Stortford Lodge.. Graham is passionate about his Simmental cattle and ultra skilled in presenting his weaners in the best condition at the right time Well done.. 2006-2007 SHOWS.. An amazing year.. We thought we had done it all the previous year with the great success at the NZ Royal show in Hamilton (Nov 05) and again at the Easter Royal show in Auckland (April 06).. Not so! Along comes October 2006 and the Hastings A P show.. It was great.. Over seventy Simmental entries! A whole ring full of yearling bulls.. A magnificent Simmental Display.. Congratulations to all those breeders who went to the trouble to participate.. Next Up November 2006.. With help of a truck leant to us by Kerry and Linda Nankervis and a truck driver in the person of Don Foster from Huntley we had our own Convoy.. With two trucks and Sue Wyley s ute with horse float in tow we set off to Christchurch for the NZ Royal Show.. We took Monried Yardstick, now just three years of age, a senior cow and calf, two two year old cows and calves, two yearling bulls and three yearling heifers together with Sue s yearling bull and Don Foster s yearling heifer total of 14.. We drove down to Wellington through wind and rain that ripped our covers about.. Across the strait on a lovely calm voyage and stayed at Blenheim for the night.. The next day, the long haul to Christchurch where we bedded a tired lot of cattle down at Canterbury Park Sale Complex.. What a wonderful few days.. In the breed section we won every event except the yearling bull class and then went on to win the Champion Royal Interbreed heifer class, and the Champion Interbreed pairs.. The Timperley family s Haylands Rupert won the interbreed yearling bull class and went on to win the Junior Meat Wool Cup.. Then Yardstick came through to successfully defend his title and won back to back NZ Royal Show Meat Wool Cups.. What a tremendous thrill.. The final day featured the all breed competitions with up to thirty five entries in each class and Bruce McKenzie standing as the senior judge.. We won every class except the yearling bull (Rupert first and Sue second) and yearling pairs class in which we couldn t field a matching pair.. Don Foster helped complete our sweep of first placings when Glennis paraded his yearling heifer to win the All breeds class against tough opposition.. What a day! What a show! But wait there is more.. The good weather finally broke and in the rain and gathering gloom I paraded Yardstick in the main arena in front of the Members stand to win the Supereme Champion Animal of the show.. Over all the champions of the other sections including hunters, hacks, ponies, sheep, goats, pigs, dairy cattle, alpacas, and llamas.. What an amazing achievement just marvellous! To cap it all off we purchased Hayland s Rupert and brought him home with us If you cant beat him, you might as well buy him.. 2007-2008 SEASON.. Does farming get much more difficult than this? Two droughts in a row is a hard act to farm through.. No Autumn saved pasture last year and so complete reliance on expensive supplementary feed throughout calving.. Thank goodness for people like Craig Palaise of Marton who kept on finding us silage and hay in the West Coast Area.. The following spring and early summer were trying.. After an early spring flush, we were just beginning to enjoy having grass again when another dry hit us.. owing to the lack of stock on some farms - we were able to secure new season s hay and silage.. Thank you to Peter Ebbett, Richard Hilson, John Stevens, Di Murphy, Paul Stitjens and Fionna Paterson of Blackburn road, and Charlie Pattison of Waiwhero for supplying hay and silage this season.. At least we were able to get in a good stockpile of supplementary food early this year before the Waikato driven price rise occurred.. Drought survival mode for Glen Anthony has included:.. Putting our 2007 mating date back one month.. Culling everything and anything in the herd that wasn t absolutely necessary to keep.. (First time we have put weaners in the works).. Finding grazing, initially for the cows and calves prior to weaning thanks to Charlie Pattison, and then since weaning for sixty cows at Te Aute thanks to  ...   us again.. No more rain until a false Autumn in February when the whole farm sprung to life only to be dried out again by a further drought with no rain until the 11th of May the morning of this years National Sale.. Drought three years in a row takes some beating!.. At least we prepared well this season buying in 200 bales of early silage and filling our barns with early spring hay.. Our heartfelt thanks to Sue and Norm Wylie who took on the summer grazing of our heifers with calves at foot and now have our weaner heifers for the winter.. We also would like to record our appreciation of Ed White s generosity in grazing our mixed aged cows and calves over the dry summer at Barnsdale and following up by grazing these cows on into the winter just fantastic thanks Ed.. The rising two year old bulls have been at home on our drought country where they have survived on a diet of good quality silage.. They have come through pretty well and we are delighted to present them to you for sale.. A P SHOWS.. As long as A P Associations put on Beef Cattle competitions we will support them, with as large a number of cattle as we can manage!.. Alas the interest of the rural community in A P Shows in general and this sort of beef cattle display in particular is sadly waning.. Hand in hand with this trend is the waning of enthusiasm of other stud breeders to display their cattle this way.. In the future it is obvious that the only beef cattle left at A P shows will come from hobby farmers and lifestyle blocks with a swing towards Highland Cattle and the smaller breeds.. Can you blame the farming community for losing interest in beef cattle showing?.. HASTINGS SPRING SHOW:.. Sue Wylie and Glen Anthony Simmental Studs dominated the Hastings Spring Show with Yardstick yearlings from both studs performing well.. Glen Anthony introduced their new acquisition Ruaview Scotch Tape to the show team.. He has a fantastic temperament and settled in well.. He soon got into the routine and proved himself to be an outstanding exhibit winning the Meat Wool Cup ahead of a strong line up of young Yardstick cattle and a good exhibit of Gelbvieh cattle brought down by Sandy Stewart all the way from Raglan.. FIELDING AUTUMN SHOW:.. The Fielding Best of Beef Show was a great success for the organisers, the Murray Grey breed and ultimately Glen Anthony Simmentals.. Cattle numbers were up and the quality of the exhibits prompted Bruce Orr to remark that in at least two or three classes the quality and numbers entered, rivalled the New Zealand Royal Show in Canterbury.. Of the seven interbreed classes competed for, the Murray Grey breed won 4 and Glen Anthony won 3.. In the final analysis Glen Anthony Utah, one of the Outstanding Yearling Bulls of the season, went on to win the Meat and Wool Cup.. AUCKLAND ROYAL EASTER SHOW:.. A disastrous entry of beef cattle for this year s show was averted by a truck and trailer load of Hawkes Bay Simmentals from Glen Anthony and Ratalea supported by Cornwall Park and Don Foster of Huntly together with a good entry of Belgium Blue cattle from Lockwood Smith.. While the show lacked huge numbers it did not lack quality and the Glen Anthony Ratalea team was sorely tested by an excellent line up of smaller framed high quality Gelbvieh cattle.. While the Gelbvieh cattle won a majority of the interbreed classes our cattle held their heads high with wins in the Senior cow and Senior bull classes and Ruaview Scotch Tape going on to win his second Meat and Wool Cup.. 2009-2010 SEASON.. SIMMENTAL MARKET REPORT.. It is now a proven fact, well grown, well presented SIMMENTAL cattle are.. unbeatable.. in the Sale Ring.. Up to $100 per head is the premium being paid.. Congratulations again this year to Graham Williamson for an outstanding line of Simmental steers that topped the Stortford Lodge early weaner fair at $960 - great stuff.. Congratulations also to Andrew Tweedy who sold an outstanding line of two year old Simmental cross steers at Stortford Lodge last Spring for $1300 or $2.. 20 per kilo liveweight.. These were purchased by the Butler family of Tikokino.. Owen Butler specially invited me out to view these cattle, he was so pleased with his purchase.. I had to fully agree with him as the line of steers looked really magnificent.. 2009 2010 SEASON.. A marvellous early spring after a wet winter.. Lots of mud on the home farm with all the cows back from grazing at Barnsdale.. We sure do miss the Onga block in wet times.. The flats of river bed stones were a great wintering pad for the cows.. Although we under foot, calving went well with our first calves not arriving until July.. The early Rupert-Farina ET calves were exciting with a heifer calf AX 15E and a bull calf AX 9E the ones to watch for the future.. After the July rush of ET and heifer calvings things slowed up and it seemed to take for ever for the mixed aged cows to finish calving.. Although wet had a good bank of feed for the lactating cows, cycling was slow and few cows with calves at foot came forward for early AI.. Luckily the yearling heifers and carry over two year old heifers (drought calves) performed well and held to AI in the first twenty two days.. To speed things up, mating was handed over to the bulls and Rupert, Ruaview Scotch Tape and Newry were called on to do their stuff.. October grass growth into November was fast and furious with many farms around us turning into early hay paddocks owing to the lack of stock (especially cattle) following the droughts.. And then the dry hit again - lovely weather for hay making.. Late November and December were extremely busy months for hay contractors with the early spring surplus being turned into silage and hay.. It is the first time for years that we had our full compliment of supplementary feed bought in, wrapped, and stacked safely away before Christmas.. On the home farm the bull mobs on rotation were quickly running out of feed as recovery rates slowed dramatically.. Norm and Sue Wyley and Richard Hilson came to our rescue again.. The Wyley s farm had a spring explosion with hay paddocks everywhere and so in November Rupert s entire mating mob were trucked out to Ashley Clinton relieving the pressure at Home.. In December the bulls were withdrawn and the cow mobs divided into those with bull calves and those with heifer calves.. One mob stayed with the Wyleys s for the summer the other went to Richard Hilson s property to graze beautiful cattle tucker that resulted from acquisition of extra land not yet grazed this spring.. Just goes to show that we can retain a relatively large herd of stud cows on a small farm providing we can get Off farm grazing when we need it and can afford to buy in heaps of hay and balage.. Thank goodness for an off farm income.. Dry December! Where to Now? Another long drought? No - nearly 200mm of rain in January - absolutely unusual and as it turned out not very helpful.. The grass did grow, it was initially green and soft, it then turned blue, then grey, then brown as the rust built up and a new dry period developed NO MORE RAIN until well into MAY.. Summer saved grass became Autumn grass.. Young cattle were weaned onto a mixture of rank, brown unappetizing Summer remnant and struggling new growth Ryegrass staggers throughout Central Hawkes Bay has never been so bad.. This dry Autumn even hit the usually wet areas west of Highway 50 and the cows had to leave their Summer grazing.. Luckily Ed White was able to help and we had the luxury of weaning the herd in his cattle yards and leaving forty cows at Barnsdale for the Autumn.. Thanks again Ed.. All this time the young bulls have had a rotation in the moist gulleys of the home farm especially fenced up for the purpose.. On a diet of a little fresh green and a lot of brown rusty rank grass they have come through pretty well.. They are now on Summer saved pasture with ad lib baleage leading up to the sale.. Not a vintage year for Glen Anthony.. We still entered a team of fifteen cattle at Hastings, Feilding and Auckland and while we won a lion s share of the prizes through weight of numbers we didn t quite rise to the high standards that we set ourselved.. Highlights would have to be the performance of the Yardstick Yearling Bulls Westerley and Waterford and the emergence of a new young bull out of the paddock in Glen Anthony Warwick by Yardstick from a Macho Man cow AP 104.. The Rupert yearling heifers promised much in the Spring with Whitney catching the judges eye at the Hastings show where she was runner up to a two year old Galbvieh bull in the Meat and Wool Cup.. The January rain didn t exactly help our show team in that our yearling heifers put on a huge growth spirt and for the first time I can remember were too big and fat at the Autumn shows - Whitney weighed over 700kg at the Royal Easter Show in Auckland.. FEILDING BEST OF BEEF:.. The outstanding yearling bull Glen Anthony Westerley by Yardstick from Marina won the Meat and Wool Cup at Feilding and will be the first Yardstick son to be retained in the herd.. The beef competition this year became another three way battle between.. Glen Anthony, and Sue Wyley s Simmentals, Lockwood Smith s Belgium Blues and Jacky Stewart s Gelbvieh Cattle.. Sue Wyley won the prestigious Female Performance Class with an outstanding productive unit of two year old heifer and heifer calf, Glen Anthony Nina won the Senior Cow Class, Ruaview Scotch Tape the Senior Bull, Praise s bull calf won his interbreed and we carried off most of the group classes.. In the Meat and Wool Cup Scotch Tape was substituted by Nina and she came a close second to the two year old Gelbvieh heifer who had an outstanding heifer calf at foot.. BEEF EXPO 2010: The outstanding performance of the Year.. Tuesday 18th May What a day!.. Two bulls stood out from the crowd: Glen Anthony Waterford - Champion Simmental, Glen Anthony Warwick Reserve Champion Simmental.. Warwick went on to sell to David and Jane Timperley for $7,500.. Waterford is still for sale as a stud bull.. Then Glen Anthony Xcess, not yet a yearling heifer weighing 480kg and led by Ashley Dingley, sold for the top price so far this year for a stud female of $6,200.. to Brian Aldridge of Lincoln, Christchurch.. What a thrill to have our whole team involved.. Sue Wyley winning the best Leaders Trophy, Glennis leading her heifer and hoping all the time that it wouldn t be sold (wish granted), Ashley leading the Champion Heifer expertly and Amey Hoogenbloom doing her own thing in the steer class winning The Lightweight European section both on the hoof and on the hook - Congratulations!.. Thanks to Merial and the Ancare brand for their generous sponsorship.. Glen Anthony Warwick.. Glen Anthony Xcess.. Thanks to Craig Chapman of Straight Furrow for these excellent stud photographs.. STEAK OF ORIGIN 2010.. To cap the day off Glennis and I attended the Steak of Origin gala dinner as finalists.. What excitement when we went on stage to win The European section with a sirloin steak from a 20 month Simmental heifer that had wintered over with Norm and Sue Wyley - FANTASTIC!.. Just shows our breeding programme is not only producing beef cattle that look good they also taste good as well!..

  • Title: 2011 : A New Era | Glenanthony Simmentals
Descriptive info: 2011 : A New Era.. Well grown well presented SIMMENTAL cattle are hard to beat in the Sale Ring.. GLENANTHONY bred SIMMENTAL cattle with their extra frame size and excellent muscling are giving our clients the edge.. Graham Williamson is making a habit of topping the Stortford Lodge Weaner Fair with his 330kg plus steers again selling above $930.. Sue and Bruce Wilson also topped the Weaner Fairs in Taranaki with their Glen Anthony sired steers and heifers.. The whole beef market was on a high this Autumn with Glen Anthony weaner bulls at 358kg selling for $930 and weaner heifers at 292kg selling for $642 net on farm.. These excellent prices emanate from the very generous meat schedule which operated this Autumn before the rising NZ $ lowered the Bar.. Back in April good Glen Anthony Simmental two year heifers brought $1500 from a live weight of 624kg killing out at 325kg and grading L2.. Four and five year old cows from the 720kg live weight range killed out at 350kg to 370kg carcass weight returning $1400 to $1500 each after grading P2.. Our Simmental steer entered in the Future Beef NZ Competitions on 15th May weighed 720kg, at 22 months.. He killed out at 406kg carcass weight (56%) and returned $1760 net before GST.. The whole point to be emphasized from these results is where the meat schedule rewards excellence in growth WEIGHT PAYS.. That is why Glen Anthony dares to breed size and extra muscle into their cattle.. Did you see the bums on our heifers at Beef Expo?.. It is true to say that the extra weight and size of Glen Anthony Simmental sired cattle for any given age betters by far the premiums paid for Angus cattle of the same age.. BEEF EXPO 2011.. Sadly we were prevented from repeating last years success by the decision of the Simmental Breed Society to cancel altogether the two year bull class and replace it with a bull calf class which we could not support.. The Beef Expo Show committee decided to hold An All Breed Heifer Calf show and sale the night before the bull sale calling it Queen of Hearts.. We decided to support this concept and entered three of our best heifer calves.. We did not feature in the show results and it was really sad to see our lovely heifers sold for an average of $2,500.. Not a bad price but not a good decision to let our best heifer calves go!.. FUTURE BEEF NZ HOOF AND HOOKS - A NEW ERA FOR GLEN ANTHONY.. For the first time, we entered a steer in this competition which promotes the involvement of young people in the beef industry.. Cattle breeders throughout the country provided steers of many different breeds for young people of all walks of life to experience breaking in and halter training of cattle.. Schools, Agricultural Training centres and private individuals entered into this competition.. For some months over the Summer and Autumn they were closely involved with training and feeding rising two year old steers.. On Friday 13th May no less than sixty four of these steers arrived at the Manfield Agricultural Events Centre to be weighed, scanned and housed overnight ready for the weekends events which included:-.. Parading the steers before a beef judge on Saturday afternoon, where the steers were judged on the hoof for their beef characteristics.. Parading the steers before a handlers judge on Sunday where the young people were judged for their expertise in handling and preparing cattle.. Sending the steers to Land Meats in Wanganui where they were processed and then judged on the hook for their carcass characteristics.. Determining prize winners in two weight divisions (light weight and heavy weight) and three breed categories within those divisions.. (British, European and Cross breed) steers within these divisions and categories were judged in two sections On the Hoof and then On the Hooks.. Announcing the Breed Champions, the Light Weight and Heavy Weight Champions, the Grand Champions On the Hoof the Grand Champions On the Hook and finally the overall Supreme Champion of the show.. Glen Anthony sired steers performed with distinction as did Amy Hoogenboom and Max Tweedie from our show team.. A Glen Anthony purebred Simmental steer (AX49) by Yardstick from a Sargent Pepper dam although only coming 2nd On the Hoof dominated the heavy weight carcass competition.. At 22 months of age he weighed 720kg, scanned 98sq cm, for his E.. M.. A.. and killed out at 406kg carcass weight grading P2.. He was judged Champion Heavy weight Carcass, Reserve Grand Champion carcass, and Champion European Breed steer overall (both Hoof and Hooks).. LEFT: Congratulations to Amy Hoogenboom who prepared, trained and led this steer in the competition.. But wait there is more.. Max Tweedie prepared and trained three Simmental-Angus crossbreed steers on his father Andrew Tweedie s property at Tutira.. These Glen Anthony sired steers grew out extremely well and at 20 months of age weighed 600kg live weight with E.. readings ranging from 84 to 91sq cm.. Although coming 2nd and 3rd in the show ring judging, these steers showed excellent carcass qualities, being judged 1st and 2nd in the  ...   Luckily Scotch Tape was in full swing and we gave him as many of the older cows as possible leaving Westerley to cover all younger females not related to Yardstick.. The overall poor Spring meant that hay and especially silage production throughout Central Hawkes Bay was at an all time low.. Through the help of Ken Eade, Sam Moore and his father Tim, and Sue and Norm Wylie we did manage to mostly fill the barns.. Our baylage stocks are sadly quite low.. We can only hope for a warm winter.. Thankfully the late January rain averted another dry Summer and rain throughout the Autumn combined with more warm sunny days has meant excellent early Autumn growth.. Something we haven t seen for three years.. What a disaster further out at the coast where that freak rain bomb devastated so many coastal properties.. SHOWING.. At both the Hastings A P Show and the Feilding Best of Beef the beef cattle sections are struggling to survive.. By taking about twenty cattle between our stud and Sue Wylie s Ratalea Stud we are able to put at least four cattle into each class to make it look like a competition.. HASTINGS A P SHOW - October 2010.. Jackie Stewart s Gelbvieh cattle came all the way from Raglan but they had a very dry Spring up there and for this early show did not mount their usual strong challenge.. Glen Anthony Westerley now 2 years of age and weighing in at 900kg won his second Meat and Wool cup, Whitney, our two year old heifer by Rupert, did well in the cow.. classes and our yearlings dominated both heifer and bull all breed classes.. FEILDING BEST OF BEEF SHOW March 2011.. This years show was sadly overshadowed by the absence of Anne Bell our lovely host from the show committee.. Anne s lovely smile and helpfulness on all issues was greatly missed and we wish her well and a speedy recovery from a neck injury.. At this show we introduced a new member to our show team from out of Left Field.. Glen Anthony Y-ata (Waiata) is an out of season calf born in February 2010.. He was the result of an Embryo Transfer programme where Kerry Nankervis mated Wai iti High Riser to a polled Willow Brook heifer by Tokaweka Handsome.. We purchased the four in calf recipients from this flush and were presented with three heifers and a bull calf in February 2010.. Y-ata grew into a very compact polled bull with excellent carcass qualities thickness, depth and softness.. Even though he was six months younger and 200kg lighter that my Spring born yearlings he caught the Eye of the three judges and was given first prize in the Yearling Bull Class and went on to tie for first with Westerley in the Meat and Wool Cup.. But wait there is more, he was then promoted to FIRST by a guest judge s deciding vote.. UNBELIEVEABLE I felt really sorry for Sue Wylie whose lovely big cow Ratalea Taylor (by Yardstick) missed out on a place in the Meat and Wool Cup Judge Off by an error in the points tally.. AUCKLAND ROYAL EASTER SHOW 20th April 2011.. We travelled north this year with my small truck plus Kevin Isaccson s truck and trailer.. A good team of helpers came north with us.. Led by Sue Wylie the team included daughter Kimberley and her husband Mark, Amy Hoogenboom and a very enthusiastic Max Speedie whose father Andrew Speedie buys bull from us for his farm at Tutira.. The Gelbvieh s from Raglan had picked themselves up since the Spring and with good Summer feeding were able to present a strong team of Females centred on a very god two year old heifer with heifer calf at foot.. Lockwood Smith brought a very strong team of Belgium Blue cattle from Ruawai in the far north.. His bull calf weighing in excess of 540kg, his three year old bull, and his mature cow were excellent cattle.. In the Simmental section our yearling bull Glen Anthony Xerox (Rupert Farina) took the judges eye.. He weighed 920kg at the show grounds.. He won the Champion Bull class ahead of Westerley and went on to win Supereme Champion.. In the all breeds classes spoils were shared pretty evenly between the top three studs.. Cow Performance Class - Gelbvieh 1st.. Belgium Blue 2nd.. Heifer Calf Class - Gelbvieh 1st.. Bull Calf Class - Belgium Blue 1st.. Sue Wylie Simmental 2nd.. Yearling Heifer Class - Glen Anthony Xena 1st.. Gelbvieh 2nd.. Yearling Bull Class - Glen Anthony Xerox 1st.. Shorthorn 2nd.. 2 year Heifer Class - Gelbvieh 1st.. Mature Cow Class - Belgium Blue 1st.. Sue Wylie Ratalie Taylor 2nd.. Mature Bull Class - Belgium Blue 1st.. Glen Anthony Westerley 2nd.. Pairs Class - Glen Anthony 1st.. Group of 3 Class - Belgium Blue 1st.. Glen Anthony 2nd.. Meat and Wool Cup - Gelbvieh 2 year heifer 1st.. - Glen Anthony Xerox 2nd.. To cap it all off for us, Max Tweedie won the Champion Handler class and Amy won reserve - An excellent result, reversing the placings obtained in the same event in Feilding..

  • Title: 2011 - 2012 Season | Glenanthony Simmentals
Descriptive info: HAWKES BAY A P SHOW - HASTINGS 2011.. With Bruce Tomlinson s agreement we brought Glen Anthony Waterford back home and included him in our show team.. What a magnificent sight - Waterford and Westerley in the ring together.. Westerley long and smooth, Waterford powerful, and strong.. Both showing great thickness throughout and massive hind quarter development.. In Hastings sadly, the Simmental cattle were the only breed to turn up - Sue Wyley, Bruce Tomlinson, and Glen Anthony.. The cattle did us all proud.. A great line up of yearling bulls and heifers and the spectacle of two mature bulls.. For the record Waterford won the Meat and Wool Cup.. A highlight of the show was the involvement of the young handlers to help display our cattle, especially Nancy Crawshaw all the way from an Angus stud north of Wairoa.. Nancy was a breath of fresh air and soon got to know our cattle and their breeding.. She really kept Amy and Max on their toes and was a joy to have stay at home for a few days leading up to the show.. A special thank you also to Kimberley and Mark.. Kimberley is so keen and able and takes some of her annual holidays to be at the shows with us.. Her husband Mark is the power behind the glamour.. He keeps the stalls clean and spends early mornings carting away soiled bedding and replacing it with barrow loads of fresh sawdust.. It is his work that enables us to keep our cattle clean throughout each show.. If we are short of a leader, Mark shows his versatility by getting changed into show gear and taking his place in the ring.. Mark and Kimberley s son Bradley at age seven is showing an interest in helping his dad and leading for granddad one day.. NEW ZEALAND ROYAL SHOW - HAMILTON 29th OCT, 2011.. Along with Sue Wyley s two outstanding yearlings and Waterford, Glen Anthony took a large team of cattle led by Westerley and including three yearling heifers, three yearling bulls, and five cows and calves.. Again Waterford and Westerley made a great spectacle in the ring together.. Waterford was judged Supreme Champion Simmental and went on to initially tie for first place in the Meat and Wool Cup only to be relegated to second on a count back.. Sue Wyley s outstanding yearling bull won the Interbreed Class and went on to win the Junior Meat and Wool Cup.. Ratalea Yukon is an excellent example of the Rupert/Yardstick cross.. He is out of Sue s excellent Yardstick show cow and shows all the carcass characteristics of his sire Haylands Rupert plus extra frame size and length.. Glen Anthony had to settle for only one Interbreed Championship with Yvette winning the Yearling Heifer Competition.. Again the highlight of the show was the great team of people that worked together to prepare the stalls and keep them clean and to wash, prepare and show the cattle.. Mark and Kimberley, Sue Wyley, Amy Hoogenboom, Max Tweedie, and both Nancy and Patrick Crawshaw.. Well done and thanks everybody.. FEILDING BEST OF BEEF MARCH 2012.. Waterford went back to mating duties at Papakuri Stn and so we set off to Feilding with our regular show team plus Y-arta (Wai Ata), some newly broken in calves and three very  ...   usual arrived early and had the stalls set up by the time the trucks arrived.. This year Nancy Crawshaw replaced Max Tweedie on the team which also included Amy and Sue.. Wai arta defeated Westerley in the Senior Simmental Bull class but it was a 6 year old Yardstick sired female with a 470kg bull calf at foot that won through.. It was just Toffee Pop s day! She won the Senior Simmental Cow class, The Supreme Champion Simmental award and went on to win the Interbreed Senior Cow Challenge against a very strong field.. (See picture back cover).. Sue s yearling bull was all class.. He won the Interbreed Yearling Bull Championship by five out of six judges giving him first place and went on to be a very creditable second to the excellent 3 year old Hereford bull, Awhea Immense in the Meat and Wool Cup.. One of the features of this Easter show, like the NZ Royal in Hamilton and several A P shows in the South Island this season, has been the resurgence of the Hereford breed in quality and in numbers entered.. A new challenge to keep us old show hands on our toes.. FUTURE BEEF NZ HOOF AND HOOKS 2012.. Amy Hoogenboom and her younger sister Rachel have been regular visitors to the stud since February both after school and during the weekends and school holidays putting lots of time into handling and training three Simmental steers for this year s Future Beef Competition.. This year, Max Tweedie and his sister Ella decided to enter Angus steers.. They handled and trained them before coming to Glen Anthony a few days prior to the event to add some finishing touches.. As well as entering these steers Glen Anthony also supplied four weaner heifers for the judging module.. The weekend of the competition 12th and 13th May was a very busy time for all concerned with scanning, weighing, washing, clipping and daily preparation of the sawdust stall area.. The steers behaved pretty well and competed in the On the Hoof carcass judging on the Saturday and the Handler judging on the Sunday.. It was a great thrill to see the two purebred Simmental steers line up first and second in the heavyweight division and then follow up on the Sunday with young Rachel gaining second place in her Handler s class and Amy winning the Intermediate Open section.. Max Tweedie won the Senior Handler s competition and went on to repeat last year s win as Overall Champion Handler.. Later at the prize giving he was announced the Winner of the Senior Beef Ambassadors prize and Amy won the Intermediate Beef Ambassadors prize.. Congratulations to them both.. It is really great to be not only associated with Max and Amy but also with Nancy Crawshaw.. These are young people who have fully deserved their success in these events, through sheer hard work and an undying passion for working with stud cattle.. Sadly, this years steers did not come through for us On the Hooks.. They failed to register in the top four for actual carcass quality and so had to be content with their success On the Hoof.. Nevertheless they killed out an average of 56% and graded P1.. With carcass weights from 360 to 386kg they returned an average price of $1350 each..

  • Title: 2012 — 2013 SEASON | Glenanthony Simmentals
Descriptive info: 2012 — 2013 SEASON.. 2012 2013 SEASON.. Spring 2012, what a time to leave the farm.. On July 19th Glennis and I travelled to LONDON for a 70 day OE.. The Welsh A P Show, two weeks at the London Olympics, travelling around the British Isles and Europe, and attending the World Simmental Congress in Germany were the main features of our journey.. Saw lots of Simmental cattle (totally polled herds in parts of.. Germany) and a variety of farm management systems.. A great Trip.. Poor Rhys Tidswell.. He, with help from Susan Best, had to weather the rain that fell throughout August, turning paddocks to mud.. How lucky are European cattle who are housed during these periods?.. Strip grazing, hay feeding, calving, Rhys and Susan did a marvellous job.. By the time we got home at the end of September, Rhys had the AI programme underway and the bulls were out with their mating mobs.. We are indebted to his work ethic and farming ability and to Sue for her enthusiasm.. On our return the rain stopped, the clouds cleared and sunny weather set in, leading to dry conditions that were to last for six months.. No significant rain from early October 2012 until late April 2013.. Severely pugged and rutted paddocks dried as hard as concrete, green feed gradually disappeared and pressure was applied to stock water supplies.. Thank goodness for the Farm Road District Water Scheme.. Just before Christmas we were lucky to be offered grazing for the cows and bull calves at Norm and daughter Sue Wylie s property up under the ranges and later for the cows and heifer calves at brother Brian Thompson s property inland from Wanganui.. Sadly when these cattle arrived home in March the rains still had not arrived and so we entered the Desert grazing mode.. Precious supplies of supplementary hay and baylage steadily disappeared as all stock remaining after selling surplus weaners and cull cows needed to be hand fed.. We are used to feeding out each day during the Winter - feeding out each day, in the Summer and Autumn is something else.. Winter 2013 is going to be interesting.. We have applied the RNS formula:.. REGRASSING the worst pugged paddocks,.. applying NITROGEN fertiliser to the main calving paddock and purchasing more SUPPLEMENTS at an inflated price.. Let s hope we get through.. -.. 2013 SIMMENTAL MARKET REPORT.. The main problem this year was that drought conditions affected the whole of the North Island.. There was no region with enough grass to encourage the purchase of the store stock from the East Coast and the Conservative beef schedule depressed by the high $NZ didn t help.. In spite of this, Simmental cross cattle sold well.. Poko poko station topped the R2 steer sale in Wairoa beating stiff competition from an excellent yarding of angus steers and Graham Williamson again topped the Stortford Lodge weaner fair with slightly depressed prices around $900 for the earlier steer sale but excellent prices around $800 for a line of beautifully grown weaner heifers at the later heifer sale.. Graham and Denise Willamson offered a unique service to the purchaser of their weaner steers.. After the sale the steers were returned to Whakamahi Station where they were adjusted until the farm was sold.. Yes you have read correctly.. Graham and Denise have sold their farm and moved to Havelock North.. We wish them all the best in their retirement.. They will be sorely missed at the weaner fairs and bull sales.. Sue and Bruce Wilson flew the Simmental cross flag for Glen Anthony at the Stratford weaner fairs.. Their top line of steers weighing 346kg made the top price of $980 per head, (2.. 83/kg) and their 2nd line of steers at 291kg made $840 per head (2.. 88/kg),.. But wait there is more, their weaner heifers averaged a massive 325kg liveweight and made $830 or ($2.. 54/kg) and they were born in August.. The winning formula - Buy a Glen Anthony Simmental Bull + mate him to good Simmental crossbred cows + feed the calves well = excellent premium prices at sale time.. In contrast to last year, in calf cows coming through early Autumn sale yards all sold for $1.. 35/kg, matching the $2.. 70 schedule, and all going to the works.. The gains made last year with many farmers increasing their breeding cow numbers, have been short lived.. Glen Anthony was out and about again this year with their large show team promoting the stud and the Simmental Breed at three A P shows here in the North Island.. We would have to say that it has not been a stella season in terms of results because we have not won  ...   thrill for all of us.. Sue absolutely deserves this award for all the hard work she has put in over the years preparing and supporting the Glen Anthony Show Team.. Glen Anthony had a good show with seconds in the heifer calf, bull calf and 2yr old heifer sections and first placings in the Senior bull (Yale AY21), Yearling bull (Zodiac AZ22) and Yearling heifer (Zephyr AZ19) competitions.. Yale was second to Sue Wylie s heifer in the Meat and Wool Cup with Zodiac third.. The New Zealand Royal Show comes to Feilding in December 2013.. AUCKLAND COCA COLA EASTER SHOW 2013.. We all rolled up to Auckland this Easter with Kimberley and Mark and family arriving early to prepare the stalls followed by Nancy Crawshaw and her mother Sue who this year joined the Glen Anthony crew - really great to have her positive approach and cheerful smiling presence.. She did a great job behind the scenes softening up the judges, and an even better job at the Motel mothering Nancy and Ella.. Sue Wylie and Ella Tweedie arrived next with the Nissan ute pulling Kimberley and Mark s trailer laden with baylage and hay.. Then Kevin rolled in with a truck and trailer load of cattle and Amy and I brought up the rear in the good old Isusu.. Susan Best was busy attending to family matters and so we missed her cheerful positiveness.. John Scott officiated as the Simmental Judge.. Xena (AXII) won the Senior Cow Class ahead of Toffee Pop, Sue Wylie s heifer and her.. Y-arta bull calf won the two year heifer class over Ratalea Yule and her Y-Arta heifer calf, Zephyr won the yearling heifer class and AA21 Praise s heifer calf by Warwick won the heifer calf class from six.. Glen Anthony entries.. Sue took out the Champion Simmental Female with her 2 yr old heifer with calf at foot.. John Scott judged Y-arta to be Superior to Yale (AYII) in the Senior Bull Class, Zodiac (AZ22) to win over Zanzibar (AZ26) in the Yearling Bull Class and Sue s Bull Calf to prevail over Glen Anthony s five entries in the Bull Calf Class.. Glen Anthony Zodiac was judged Champion Male Simmental and in the final Breed Competition, lost to Sue s Heifer who was judged Supreme Champion.. In the All Breed Classes Simmentals performed very well winning nine out of thirteen on the last day:.. Cow and Heifer Performance Class.. - Toffee Pop First, Sue s Heifer Third.. Special Progeny Class.. - Toffee Pop First, Y-arta Second.. Interbreed Heifer Calf.. - Glen Anthony AA21 First, Glen Anthony AA07 Second.. Interbreed Bull Calf.. - Sue Wylie s Bull Calf First, Glen Anthony AA33 Second.. Interbreed Yearling Heifer.. - Glen Anthony Zephyr Second.. Interbreed Yearling Bull.. - Glen Anthony Zodiac First, Glen Anthony Zanzibar Third.. Interbreed 2yr Heifer.. - Sue Wylie First, Glen Anthony Second.. Interbreed Senior Female.. - Toffee Pop Third.. Interbreed Senior Bull.. - Glen Anthony Yale First, Glen Anthony Y-arta Second.. Interbreed Group of Three.. - Glen Anthony Second Glen Anthony Third.. Interbreed Group of Two.. - Glen Anthony First, Glen Anthony Third, Glen Anthony Fourth.. Interbreed Team of Five.. - Glen Anthony Simmental First.. Meat and Wool Cup.. - Hereford Senior Cow First, Sue Wylie Simmental Heifer Second.. Another win for the Hereford Breed.. They really have to be congratulated.. The Peters family from Otorohanga performed very well.. Their Senior Cow and Yearling Heifer were unbeatable.. FUTURE BEEFNZ HOOF AND HOOKS:.. Our heavy weight steers failed to compete with the excellent entry of Herefords and it was left up to Tom Dever from Poko poko Station with his Glen Anthony bred steer and Jon Knauf from Kerrah Simmentals to win the Crosbred Steer Competitions.. Our heavyweight Simmental Purebred Steer was a victim of inconsistent scanning results.. His eye muscle scanned 96 sq.. cm on farm on 11/4, but only 89 at Feilding on 10/5.. He could not compete on the hoof with the Hereford who scanned 104.. On the hooks our steer s carcass actually measured 106 sq.. cm and the Hereford 97.. This turn around came too late to score enough points to save the day.. Not to worry, 342kg at 20 months, while being penilised for being over the optimum carcass weight, still made $1400.. Thanks must go to Amy Hoogenboom for preparing the steers on the day and congratulations for facing up to and overcoming a personally difficult weekend.. Congratulations also to Ella Tweedie.. I was really proud of the way she presented herself, the way she presented and paraded her big Simmental crossbred steer Horse and the way she spoke.. Her speech over the public address system was great.. Ella has really come of age..
